An Oldsmobile 371 was recently located & it seemed to be a promising engine candidate. After tearing it down though we found that a couple cylinders in the block were compromised & needed to be sleeved. We discussed repair but further inspection of the block showed cracks that ruled this one out as a viable powerplant.
I'm not too torn up over this one to be honest. The Olds 371 was produced between 1957 & 1960 and while I would have fudged my build guidelines in exchange for more horsepower, I think I'll be happiest with a Rocket 303 or 324 in this build. The early Olds engines produced between 1949 & 1956 will be period correct & still offer a measurable horsepower increase over a stock Ford Flathead.
- 1935 Ford Flathead - 85hp, 144 lb-ft torque
- 1953 Oldsmobile Rocket - 165 hp, 275 lb-ft torque
